Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I in 1918.
Every year we observe a two minutes of silence in the workplace in remembrance of our fallen heroes. Although the event happens close to a century ago, I love the spirit of solidarity and remembrance when I saw fellow Londoners going to work with a poppy in their lapels. It reminds us never to forget those who have sacrifice their lives for the country.
I brought this book on my Europe trip 2 weeks ago but I didn’t have a chance to read finish it (I always seems unable to finish any book these days).
I’ll finish this as soon as I can. It’s my tribute to the heroes.

There’s a fantastic Kindle daily deal today (Sunday)about the heroic advance from the beaches of Normandy to Berlin.

Every time I go to Normandy I find myself thinking about the struggles that took place by ordinary blokes as they fought their way across the hedges and ditches of Northern France.

Posted by JoV | November 11, 2012, 9:24 pmThink I’m entering a writing phase, thanks to not being able to finish one book in the last 2 weeks and at 400 pages in I’m loathe to abandon Hilary Mantel’s French revolution epic A Place of Greater Safety. I believe she’s a lot more compelling in her writing today, 20 years after she wrote this.
Nice book you have there to read in remembrance, hope you manage to finish it.

Posted by JoV | November 11, 2012, 9:26 pmI thought All Quiet on the Western Front was a very powerful book. I hope you like it too.

Posted by JoV | November 11, 2012, 11:19 pmI agree with Jessica. Very powerful. I appreciated how it showed the initial patriotic sentiment and the popular support for WW1 in Germany and then followed the group of young soldiers into the trenches and describes their changing attitude towards the war.
