The Girl On the Train

The comparison to Gone Girl made me picked up this book. So I have fallen prey to the marketing gimmick of referring a book to a sensational best seller. Is it any better than Gone Girl? Here’s what I think, but first a little intro about the book. The book is separated by chapters narrated by … Continue reading

Strange Shores by Arnaldur Indriðason

The name Arnaldur Indriðason conjures up the Silence of the Grave on my shelf who won the author the prestigious CWA Gold Dagger award in 2005. I have not read any of his book yet. I was hoping to read something more exciting that brings back my reading mojo and crime fiction usually do the … Continue reading

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I am probably the last person who read this book in the universe. Everybody has read it. ‘Thriller of the year’ – Observer review says. If there is one thing that makes me want to read a book, it would be curiosity. What is this book all about? Why does it claims to be the … Continue reading

The Black Path by Åsa Larsson

I want to say sorry that I haven’t been active in commenting nor writing a review. There have been too much going on at work and I am exhausted just trying to put thoughts to paper on a long design document. I finished reading The Black Path on the 28 February and didn’t feel up … Continue reading

Out by Natsuo Kirino

Phew, I finally finished reading this. The book cover is so provocative that I have to wrap it up with a cloth cover when I am on the train. Gosh, what can I say about this book? It’s nothing like what I have read before. Entertaining? Quite. Plotting? Excellent. Thrilling? Towards the end. Horrifying? Yes. … Continue reading

Hour of the Wolf by Håkan Nesser

I felt the pressure as the year ends but the turning point was of course to remember that the holiday season was meant to be one that we cherished not get stressed over what we haven’t read! So I have decided to indulge in my guilty pleasure and read a fast moving crime fiction instead. … Continue reading

The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino

It’s hard to write a review for this book. Meaning I can’t write the review without spoiling the story for you. You see this is one of the rare mystery books that tells you who-dunnit-it at the very beginning and then you watch the authority playing a cat and mouse chase to corner the culprit(s) … Continue reading

Villain by Shūichi Yoshida

I saw the book Villain in the new 2011 paperback edition in my library and I decided to pick it up. I knew it is a crime fiction but I don’t quite what is all about. The blurb says:  A young woman is brutally murdered on a remote mountain road. A young construction worker, Yuichi, is … Continue reading

The Mind’s Eye by Håkan Nesser

Teacher Janek Mitter woke up one morning with a hangover and discovered his wife, Eva Ringmar, of three months lying facedown in the bath tub, dead. Even during the court trial Mitter has no recollection of what happened from the moment he passed out till he woke up. He is found guilty of a drunken … Continue reading

Until thy wrath be past by Åsa Larsson

17-year-old Wilma Persson, together with her boyfriend, is diving beneath the ice of Lake Vittangijärvi, looking for the wreck of a Nazi transport airplane that crashed there during the War, a plane that had been carrying supplies for the Wehrmacht in 1943. Soon a horrifying event happens that plastered vividly on my mind when both … Continue reading

Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. - Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
